(Port) Wine of the month April 2023: Douro Boys Anniversary Very Old Tawny Port

Being invited to a birthday party is especially thrilling if the host opens the huge wine cellar and tries to impress you with everything inside. The five houses Niepoort, Quinta do Crasto, Quinta do Vallado, Quinta do Vale D. Maria and Quinta do Vale Meao joined forces in 2002/2003 for a joint promotion of their wines and Ports, led by the capable Dorli Muhr. This project now turns twenty and after the fantastic Vintage Port 2011 and the very good Vintage Port 2017 everyone chipped in some cask-matured Port with various age to bottle a joint Very old Tawny Port: Dark-orange color with dark-red reflections. Toffee, nuts of all kinds, coffee- and malty notes in the very balanced bouquet. Very nicely refreshing and integrated acidity on the plate with toffee, coffee and caramel. The long aftertaste is also very balanced by the acidity. 19/20
